John Ball - High School English Teacher

John Ball

John Ball High School English Teacher

High School English Teacher

Welcome John Ball, high school English teacher and yearbook advisor, to Heritage Christian School. Prior to becoming a teacher, John was a minister and missionary. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Youth Ministry and Adolescent Studies from Judson University, a master’s in Divinity from Northern Seminary and completed a transition to teaching program at Saint Mary of the Woods.

John felt called to the ministry during the summer of his junior year of high school and pursued his degree after graduation. After college, he was blessed to spend a year in the Philippines as a missionary teacher at an international K-12th grade school, which is where he developed a love for teaching. After returning to the U.S., he served as a youth minister, followed by full-time pastoral positions in Nebraska and Kansas. While filling a need as a substitute teacher, John felt God calling him to be a missionary in the classroom.

John says that he approaches his classroom like a pastor with a missionary mindset. “By this, I mean I want to help students engage with the world around them through literature and to know that if they put in the effort, they have what it takes to make it in the world as they follow God's direction. By approaching the study of literature and asking, ‘What does this teach us about who God is?’, ‘What does this tell us about how God interacts with the world’ and ‘How does this help me follow Christ more closely,’ I want to help bring the world alive in everything they do.”

Outside of work, John enjoys spending time with his wife and four children, being outdoors and playing role-playing games. He admires the German Theologian, Dietrich Bonhoeffer because “Even though he was not a perfect man, he devoted his life and work to God and by doing this, even during the darkest part of World War II, he is seen as an example of life and faith in a world gone mad.”
