Nancy Jacobson

Educational Support Services Teacher

You may not even notice the candy dish that sits on her office desk. But for Heritage teacher Nancy Jacobson, it's much more than just a confectionary container. It's an effective tool for spiritual conversations with her students. In her early days at Heritage, she dubbed it "God's Grace." The name stuck. "It has opened up incredible conversations," she says.

Here's how it works: Jacobson welcomes students to help themselves to a piece of candy, with one condition; think of something to share about the Lord. The kids' responses have amazed her. One student spoke of the sweetness of God's grace in her life. As he swirled a sour candy in his mouth, another student reflected on the reality of God's grace when life's circumstances are anything but sweet. The "God's Grace" candy dish has become a permanent and popular fixture.

Creativity like this is a hallmark of Jacobson's teaching style. This morning, she's preparing a tray full of empty camera film containers with various items inside each one. She'll use them to play a sensory game with her young students to help them learn auditory discrimination.

Jacobson joined HCS' Educational Support Services (ESS) faculty in 2006 and has taught multiple grades within the Explorers and Directed Studies programs. Today, she teaches elementary students in the STAR small-group reading program and oversees the SEARCH AND TEACH one-to-one early intervention program. She also works with individual students and helps teachers to address learning differences in their classrooms.

They also need to know that this is a safe place for them to make mistakes and to find out it's okay. We're here to love them.

"Part of my role is helping students with academics," concludes Jacobson. "They also need to know that this is a safe place for them to make mistakes and to find out it's okay. We're here to love them."
