Amy (Frazier) Mack (’88) has an undeniable passion for serving others. In fact, this has been her life’s work for nearly 20 years. She is currently a professional firefighter and paramedic and is also a Registered Nurse. In July, Amy will celebrate 18 years with the Virginia Beach Fire Department. Two years ago she earned her R.N. and works for Hang 10 Drips, which specializes in Functional Medicine, health and wellness.
Amy’s career path started out fairly uneventful. “I was a stay-at-home mom of three awesome kids, which is my greatest accomplishment, with a passion for fitness. I had even completed four full Ironman Triathlons. With firefighting being a physically demanding career, I decided that I was up for the challenge,” explained Amy. In 2019, while working part-time in an emergency room as a paramedic tech, Amy decided to go back to school to become a registered nurse.
Amy says that she loves being a public servant. “Serving as a firefighter has provided me with so many opportunities, both personally and professionally,” she explained. She served on the Marine Team on the department’s fire boats for 10 years and became a boat captain. She served as an instructor at the Fire Academy and is a surf rescue swimmer and Peer Fitness instructor. She was awarded the Medal of Honor for rescuing an unresponsive victim of a house fire and has earned several awards for saving lives throughout her career.
She looks back fondly on her time at Heritage Christian School, particularly playing basketball for the Lady Eagles. She recalls her senior year at Heritage as the most memorable sports season of her high school career. “More importantly, though, I gave my life to Christ during the summer before I started attending Heritage, so spending the next school year in a Christ-centered environment set my feet on solid ground,” Amy said. Amy plans to retire from the fire department in the near term and continue her nursing career in medical missions. She would also like to be a stay-at-home grandma to her four (almost five) grandchildren, Johnny, Josie, Louis, Mikey and Jeremia (due in August).
Amy’s life verse is Psalms 18:32-37: "It is God who arms me with strength and makes my way perfect. He makes my feet like the feet of the deer; He enables me to stand on the heights. He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend a bow of bronze. You give me your shield of victory, and your right hand sustains me; you stoop down to make me great."
