Denise Thistle

Elementary Spanish Teacher

A California native who grew up bilingual in Spanish and English, Mrs. Denise Thistle never imagined she’d end up teaching Spanish in the Midwest. This is Denise’s first year teaching at Heritage -- and her first year teaching Spanish at all!

Denise grew up in Los Angeles, then studied secondary education at Hyles-Anderson College in Crown Point, IN. It was there that she met her husband, Matt. She returned to California to teach algebra and coach volleyball, but stopped teaching when she and Matt moved to Arkansas.

When a pastoral position opened up for Matt in Fishers three years ago, the Thistles moved to Indiana. After enrolling their daughter Jocelyn in Heritage for kindergarten (now in 3rd grade), Denise began substitute teaching at Heritage. Denise quickly fell in love with the Heritage community and with elementary students, so when the chance arose to teach Spanish, she took it! She has loved her time as a Heritage teacher.

“I hope to make learning Spanish fun so that students will want to pursue it when they are older,” she said.

Denise enjoys spending time with her family and their dog Peanut, cheering for Boston sports teams, and playing volleyball whenever she can. Being a California girl, Denise also enjoys the changing of the seasons here in the Midwest.
