Heritage Christian School Standard of Dress

At Heritage, we desire that students have a standard of dress that is modest and neat. Parents/guardians, as the primary educators of their children, play a key role in this area of standard of dress. It is important for parents/guardians to guide and supervise their children in the selection of appropriate clothing. The guidelines below are intended to clearly outline the expectations of Heritage Christian School.

Standard Dress Code Requirements

Students must be in compliance with the Standard of Dress prior to entering the school and continue until the end of the school day.
All clothing must be properly sized, modest and unrevealing in cut, fit, and texture.
Modesty is expected at all times at any school event or function including any co/extra-curricular activities.
The Standard of Dress is for all school days unless special dress is approved by the administration.

General Guidelines

Girls’ and boys’ clothing should be properly sized.
Girls’ and boys’ clothing should completely cover undergarments and necessary parts of the body at all times including while sitting, standing, and bending over.
Keep jewelry to a minimum. Jewelry will be removed from the child if it distracts from learning. Only girls may wear earrings.
Platform shoes and flip flops are not allowed. Sandals are allowable during appropriate weather.
Hats of any kind are to be worn outside only.
Hair is to be clean, neat, well-kept. Hair should not draw undue attention, and extreme styles are not permitted. Please consult with your principal if you have questions.

Tops

Acceptable Styles:
- Collared or crew necks (plain or tasteful designs)
- Sweaters and sweatshirts
- Tops with brand name logos (unless offensive)
- Tops with name of college teams or professional teams (no pictures)
- Tank tops with wide straps

Unacceptable Styles:
- Long, oversized t-shirts
- Tank tops with spaghetti straps
- Thin, plain white t-shirts
- Shirts with offensive words or pictures
- Shirts with media advertising or political references

Pants, Skirts, and Dresses

Acceptable Styles:
- Denim in good repair; not heavily faded or torn
- Slacks
- Neat sweatpants
- Long, modest shorts during warm weather
- Capri pants
- Girls' skirts and dresses must be modest in length. This standard is in place even when girls are wearing leggings.
- Sundresses may be worn with or without a shirt through third grade. Fourth grade girls should wear a shirt under the sundress.
- Girls are to wear shorts under skirts or dresses during gym class or while using playground equipment.
- Leggings should be worn only under modest length dresses and skirts, not as pants

Unacceptable Styles:
- Lycra spandex pants - long or short
- Tight fitting pants that show the outline of undergarments or outline of body
- Pants or shorts with writing on the backside

Dress Standards for Grades 5-12

Heritage Christian has a standard of dress for students shaped by the biblical principle of modesty and influenced by our school’s preferences of being clean and neat. Our standard of dress is intended to give clear guidelines and also allow for personal preferences. We believe that parents play a key role in guiding and supervising your student in the selection of clothing that complies with our standard of dress.

General principles that guide our standard of dress include:

Standard of dress guidelines for school:

Shirt guidelines:
- Students are permitted to wear sweaters, ¼ zip, and short/long-sleeved collared shirts; crew neck shirts can be worn under an additional layer.
- Students are permitted to wear HCS sweatshirts/shirts or college sweatshirts.
- Shirt logos larger than a credit card size are not permitted other than on an HCS shirt/sweatshirt or college sweatshirt.
- All females should wear a layer of clothing underneath their shirts.

Pant, capri, skirt, and short guidelines:
- Must be tan, beige, navy blue, gray or black; No jeans, athletic shorts/sweatpants, leggings.
- Skirts and shorts should be modest in length (at least to mid-thigh).

Additional daily guidelines:
- Footwear (shoes or sandals) must be worn. No flip flops.
- Hats and hoods are not permitted to be worn in the building.
- Makeup and accessories should be neat and simple.
- The facial hair of guys should be well-groomed.
- Visible tattoos and body piercings (other than earrings for girls) are not permitted.
- Hair is to be clean, neat, well-kept. Extreme styles are not permitted. Please consult with your principal if you have any questions.

Spirit day guidelines:
- Students may wear a Heritage t-shirt with relaxed, loose-fitting sweatpants, athletic style pants, or jeans (with no holes/rips).
- Spirit days are the first Friday of every month. Additional spirit days may be added. Refer to instructions given by your principal for these days.

Special event guidelines (such as winter formal, junior-senior banquet, 8th grade celebration)
- Modest but more formal attire is appropriate for these events. Principals will provide specific guidelines based on the event.
- General guidelines include:
  - Girls’ dresses should be of modest length, tightness, and appearance. Additional modesty guidelines include no visible midriff, no low cut, no backless.
  - Guys should wear an appropriate suit (or suit coat w/ tie and dress pants).
