Stocks (or securities) and mutual funds that have increased in value and been held for more than one year are popular assets to use when making a gift to Heritage Christian School. Making a gift of stock or mutual funds allows you to support our work while realizing important benefits for yourself.

When you donate appreciated stock or mutual funds you have held more than one year, you can reduce or even eliminate federal capital gains taxes on the transfer. You are also entitled to a federal income tax charitable deduction based on the fair market value of the securities at the time of the transfer. When you donate stock to Heritage, you receive the same income tax savings that you would if you wrote us a check, but with the added benefit of eliminating capital gains taxes on the transfer, which can be as high as 20 percent.

Making a gift of stock to support Heritage is as easy as instructing your broker to transfer the shares. Contact the Heritage Advancement Department at advancement@heritagechristian.net for transfer instructions.

You may be able to double (or even triple!) your gift. More than 15,000 companies and subsidiaries have a program that matches gifts made to support education. Matching gifts are directed to the same designation as your original gift, unless your employer dictates otherwise. Heritage’s Advancement Department will recognize you for the total amount.

A charitable bequest is one or two sentences in your will or living trust that leave to Heritage Christian School a specific item, an amount of money, a gift contingent upon certain events or a percentage of your estate.

By including a bequest to Heritage in your will or living trust, you are ensuring that we can continue our mission for years to come. Since your estate is eligible for an unlimited federal estate tax charitable deduction, your gift reduces the taxes due by your heirs.

A gift of life insurance is a unique way to give to Heritage. To qualify, Heritage needs to become owner and beneficiary. You may choose to donate a paid-up policy no longer needed, give a policy that is not fully paid-up and take a deduction for the present value of the policy, or make Heritage the owner and beneficiary of a new policy. Ongoing premium payments qualify as charitable deductions.

A gift of appreciated real estate is similar to a gift of appreciated stock. Any type of property you have owned for more than one year qualifies as a charitable contribution at its fair market value. The asset may be given outright, or may serve as the corpus of a trust arrangement, or in the case of a personal residence, may be given with the right of lifetime tenancy by the donor and/or spouse. An immediate charitable deduction is available to the donor, and the gift is not subject to capital gains taxes.
