Info For Parents
Regular and Extended-Day Options
In order to make the preschool program accessible for all parents and children who are interested in enrolling, the school structures regular schedule (8:00am - 11:50am) and extended-day (8:00am - 2:40pm) classes depending on parents' needs from year to year.
3 Day or 5 Day Option
In addition to the regular and extended-day option for your preschooler's schedule, parents also have the option to enroll their child in a 5 day class (Monday-Friday) or a 3 day class (Tuesday-Thursday).
Class Size + Ratios
Last year, our preschool served about 30 children, divided into three different classrooms (two 5 day rooms and one 3 day room). Our aim is to keep the ratio at 6:1, so three teachers and their assistants manage about 12 children to a classroom.
Students arrive at 7:40am and start centers. The day progresses with a maze down the hall, welcome and pledges, calendar, phonics/reading readiness, recess, small motor skills, printing, math, Bible, lunch, and recess. Regular day students dismiss at 11:50am. Extended-day students then have specials, rest time, snack time, enrichment time (science, social studies, themed activities), and story time. Dismissal is at 2:40pm.
Children can bring their lunch or order a hot or cold lunch from the cafeteria for $3.95 per day which includes white milk, chocolate milk or water. Lunch will be taken into the classroom. [View the HCS Lunch Menu]
Extended-Day preschoolers are asked to bring a healthy fruit break snack for the classroom. Examples of what to bring include fresh fruits and veggies, crackers, cheese. (No gummy bears or fruit roll-ups.) Snacks will be eaten in the afternoon.
We have naptime for children who stay for the extended-day preschool. Children are invited to rest for 1-1.5 hours. Children are encouraged to bring a blanket or snuggly from home. Naptime mats are to be purchased from Heritage.
We follow the conscious discipline model that teaches children to self-sooth and resolve conflict by using their "big voice" to share and get along.
Parents Volunteering in the Classroom
Parents may walk their children into the classroom for the first week of school. After that, teachers need about a month to establish routines before introducing helpers into the classroom (unless a birthday occurs, in which case the parents are invited to attend). Parents must go through a volunteer process online, and then the teacher will invite volunteers on an as needed basis.
Parent Teacher Conferences
Parent Teacher Conferences are held in October, but parents are encouraged to connect with teachers anytime throughout the year.
Class Dojo is an app that teachers use to communicate classroom pictures and vides of activities throughout the week with parents.
