Kindergarten

Kindergarten marks an important transition as students apply foundational skills, develop academically, stimulate interests, and grow in independence. The Heritage Kindergarten program builds on Early Childhood foundations while preparing students for the expectations of elementary school in a Christ-centered environment.

Kindergarten at Heritage Christian School in Indianapolis serves children who turn 5 years old by June 1 and is part of our Early Childhood Program, which also includes Preschool and Prep-K.

5-Day Program

Half Day | 8 AM – 12 PM
Full Day | 8 AM – 2:10 PM

Classes are intentionally structured to provide consistency, meaningful routines, and age-appropriate learning experiences.

A Day at Heritage Kindergarten

Kindergarten students follow structured daily routines that balance focused instruction, collaboration, movement, and creativity. Students participate in Bible instruction, core academics, specials, lunch, and outdoor play while building responsibility and confidence.

Kindergarten Curriculum

The kindergarten curriculum at Heritage is designed to help students apply foundational skills, build academic stamina, and grow in independence. Through structured instruction, hands-on learning, and meaningful practice, students develop the skills and confidence needed for a successful transition into elementary school.

Bible

Kindergartners learn that the Bible is the word of God. They learn that the Bible teaches who God is: Creator, Savior, and Lord. They learn to talk to God through prayer. They learn that the Bible tells the story of how God gave special promises to Abraham and his descendants. Kindergartners learn that the Bible tells the story of how God sent his Son, Jesus, to be born as one of Abraham’s descendants, and came to be the Savior for all people. They also learn that the Bible teaches that everyone has sinned and is separated from God, his plan for salvation is in Christ alone, and that we bring honor to God when we walk in his ways.

Language Arts

Kindergarten students engage in rich language and literacy activities to build foundational reading and communication skills. They learn letter-sound relationships, decode simple words, and recognize common high-frequency words. Through rhyming, syllable work, and sound identification, they strengthen phonemic awareness. Shared writing activities including drawing, dictating, and writing help them express ideas. Developing comprehension is essential as students learn to understand story elements like characters, setting, and events, and practice asking and answering questions about texts.

Math

Math instruction emphasizes hands-on learning and exploration to develop number sense, problem-solving, and mathematical reasoning. Students learn to count to 100 by ones and tens, understand the relationship between numbers and quantities, and compare numbers. Kindergarteners solve simple addition and subtraction problems within 10 using objects, drawings, and equations. Students work with numbers 11-19 to understand place value, learning to represent these numbers as composed of tens and ones. They will identify shapes and their attributes, and will gain understanding of spatial relationships like above, below, and next to.

Social Studies

Our kindergarten students learn about rules, authority figures, and the importance of good citizenship. They explore the roles of community helpers and understand the concept of making fair decisions and following rules. Kindergarteners are introduced to basic geographical concepts, such as identifying land and water features on a map. They learn about directions (north, south, east, west) and how to describe the location of people and places. They explore the concepts of time by learning about past and present events. Family history and traditions are discussed, as well as important national holidays and symbols like the American flag and the Pledge of Allegiance.

Art

Kindergarten students begin to identify and draw differences in lines and shapes, and identify colors as primary and secondary. They recognize the different art media and use them to begin to appreciate God’s gift of the visual arts. Students learn to communicate ideas that are personally important and talk about their own art and the art of others. They also learn to be good stewards by taking care of equipment and tools.

Music

Kindergarten students have a variety of musical experiences focusing primarily on singing and moving. Students learn to match pitch with others, move with a steady beat, and recognize and perform basic rhythm patterns. They also grow in music appreciation by listening to and responding to selections of music in varied styles, and begin to understand how the Creator has given man the ability to make music to describe our world. Students also sing and play simple folk songs and games.

STEM

STEM introduces kindergartners to basic scientific concepts and practices. They explore the characteristics and needs of living things, learning to distinguish between living and non-living things. Kindergarteners explore properties of objects and materials, such as color, texture, and shape. They begin to understand motion and how objects can change position. Students learn to ask questions, make observations, and gather information to explain the world around them. STEM emphasizes hands-on activities and observations to develop curiosity and foundational scientific thinking.
