Janice Houghton
Library Media Specialist for Grades 5-12

For Janice Houghton, becoming a librarian was more than a career—it was a childhood dream that took root in second grade. “As a child I loved school, and by 2nd grade I wanted to become a teacher. I even 'played school' at home,” she shared. Her passion for books began early, and by sixth grade, while helping out in her school library, she discovered that being a librarian could be even better than teaching.
Janice studied Elementary Education at Grace College and went on to teach 1st, 2nd, and 6th grades before becoming Heritage’s K-12 librarian—working out of the same space where the library media center stands today.
Now in her role as Library Media Specialist for grades 5-12, Janice strives to “provide the best books and resources to support both pleasure reading and classroom projects.” She values the opportunity to serve across eight grade levels, allowing her to build meaningful relationships and watch students grow.
Her commitment to faith is evident in the way she chooses items for the library with intentional care. “My faith walk informs how I select books and materials for the library,” she explained.
Janice also leads Heritage’s Mock Trial program, which she’s directed for 20+ years! She’s passionate about the way it challenges and equips students.
Janice’s connection to Heritage spans decades and continents. After serving as the K-12 librarian, she followed a calling to become a missionary in Russia for several years. Even during her time abroad, her bond with Heritage remained strong. “Heritage actively participated in my ministry in Russia by praying for me, printing and mailing out my newsletters, sending care packages, and allowing me to speak in chapels,” she recalled. She returned to HCS in 2004 and has been a beloved part of the school community ever since.
Outside of work, Janice enjoys reading (she averages 2–4 books per week!), hiking, and traveling. She also shares her home with Tiki, a Shih Tzu named after a Hebrew word for “hope.”
When asked what she loves most about Heritage, her answer came quickly: “I love the family-like community of Heritage.” And it’s clear that for many students and staff, Janice is a treasured part of that family.
