Len Somers - 8th Grade US History Teacher

Len Somers

8th Grade US History Teacher

Meet Len Somers, 8th Grade U.S. History Teacher at HCS. Len spent his early teaching years at a Christian school in Hutchinson, Kansas, before being called to Heritage. He says, “Christian school Kingdom education has always been important to me, and I believe that the Lord has me at the perfect place for me.”

A graduate of Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, with a BA in Education in Social Studies, Mr. Somers is passionate about bringing history to life. “In my classroom, at HCS, I strive to bring history to life and integrate biblical truth into the lessons and facts from the past. I want my students to recognize that God is in control of all things past, present, and future, and how the Lord has used people and events to accomplish His plan for mankind.”

Faith is central to Mr. Somers’ teaching. He shares, “I integrate my faith within my classroom by sharing my life experiences and how God has personally worked in my life. I want my students to know how personal God is to me and how real He works throughout our lives.”

One of the most meaningful aspects of time at Heritage has been the relationships he's built with both colleagues and families. “The people I work with and the families I’ve built relationships with have truly become my second family. I am so blessed to be surrounded by such godly and gracious people who have become dear friends.”

Mr. Somers finds great fulfillment in knowing he’s made a lasting impact on his students. “Maintaining relationships with students long after they’re in my class and hearing how the Lord is guiding them is very rewarding.”

Outside of the classroom, Mr. Somers enjoys playing golf, hiking, spending time outdoors, and watching sports. He has four adult children and is excited to embrace his new role as a grandfather, having welcomed his first grandchild in January.

An interesting fact about Mr. Somers is that he has had the opportunity to visit the Oval Office in Washington, D.C., and has been on board Air Force Two, the Vice President’s plane—experiences that any U.S. history buff would appreciate, and that certainly add a personal touch to his lessons!
