Rick Madsen - High School Math Teacher

Rick Madsen

High School Math Teacher

Rick Madsen teaches high school math at Heritage Christian School, focusing primarily on Geometry and AP Statistics. With students ranging from sophomores to seniors, Rick brings a wealth of life experience and a deep passion for teaching and faith to the classroom.

His journey to Heritage has been anything but traditional. After college, he taught middle-school math in Botswana through the Peace Corps. Reflecting on the experience, he shared, “It was a great experience (naturally with some challenges), and I thought I enjoyed teaching, but I wasn’t entirely sure I wanted to do it for all of my working years.” Eventually, his career led him to statistical work with the Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission, where he analyzed fisheries data. Though he enjoyed the meaningful work, he felt called to a more interactive, service-oriented role. “I thought I might better serve the Lord and others by getting back into teaching,” he explained. A move to Indiana led him to Heritage, where he has found a truly fulfilling role.

Rick earned his B.S. in Mathematics from Wheaton College and a Master’s in Statistics from Colorado State University. His teaching philosophy focuses on deep understanding and engagement. “In my classroom, I strive to have my students understand why mathematical relationships work and why they make sense, rather than trying to memorize a lot of disconnected facts. I think that understanding patterns and reasons is where real learning and problem-solving occur,” he said. His goal is to create an engaging environment where students grow not only academically but also spiritually, in their relationships with each other and with God.

Faith is central to Rick’s approach at Heritage. “I often focus on the gospel message and that we are made right with the Lord because of Jesus’ sacrifice and God’s love and mercy, and that we can’t earn it,” he shared. He hopes his students are reminded that grace, rather than personal effort, is the foundation of their relationship with God.

Rick’s favorite part of working at Heritage is his students. “I really enjoy getting to know my students and spending time with them. They make my days enjoyable and interesting,” he said. One of his most rewarding experiences was seeing a former student return to share in chapel how the Lord had changed his life, a moment he found deeply meaningful.

Outside of school, Rick enjoys a range of outdoor activities, from biking and hiking to canoeing. He and his wife, Sue, often spend time with their children, Andrew and Becky, who are Heritage graduates, and their spouses. This past summer, he went backpacking on Isle Royale in Lake Superior and completed a 90-mile canoe trip in Maine with family. Rick is also on a personal mission to reach the highest points of as many states as he can, with 15 states already checked off the list.
